Indian River Co, FL (July 24, 2021) – A man from Palm City was arrested after he ran a red light and hit a pick-up truck, leaving a woman pinned inside the wrecked vehicle on Wednesday, July 21st in Indian River County.

Fire Rescue crews had to cut the truck open and extricate the trapped woman.

23-year-old Spencer Ryan Spraker was charged with driving under the influence with serious bodily harm.

The 21-year-old woman was still in critical condition as of Thursday at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce. A source inside the department stated that the woman’s injuries are “likely to result in serious personal disfigurement and protracted loss or impairment of the function of bodily members and organs.”

The collision, which happened at about 11:00 p.m., involved a white 2016 GMC Canyon, driven by the woman, and a silver Ford F-250, driven by Spraker, took place at the intersection of 4th Street and 27th Avenue.

Reports show that as Spraker was driving southbound along 27th Avenue, he failed to stop at the traffic light at the intersection and crashed into the GMC’s driver’s side door. The T-bone collision pushed the door frame into the female driver, causing grievous bodily injury.

Firefighters had to use the jaws of life, a hydraulic cutting tool, to cut through the GMC’s passenger door to free the woman, who was then taken by paramedics to Lawnwood trauma center in Fort Pierce with a fracture to her left leg, an injury to her collar bone, possible broken ribs, possible broken lower back, and a concussion.

Deputies said that Spraker had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and was unsteady on his feet. He was arrested and booked.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
